One of our approaches
Person-Centred Therapy was developed by psychologist Carl Rogers. It’s built on the idea that people have their own capacity to grow and heal, given the right kind of relationship, rather than needing to be directed or fixed by an expert.

How it works
Your clinician brings three things to every session. Acceptance without judgment, whatever you bring into the room. Empathy: a real effort to understand your experience from your point of view. And genuineness: being a real person with you, rather than playing a distant, professional role.
The idea is that inside this kind of steady, non-judgmental relationship, you’re able to reach your own insight and move toward growth at your own pace. The clinician doesn’t direct the process, offer guidance, or steer you toward a particular outcome.
In session
There’s no set structure, agenda, or homework. Your clinician follows your lead, reflecting back what they’re hearing and understanding as you talk, rather than offering interpretations, exercises, or guidance.
Sessions might range widely from week to week, depending on what’s most present for you at the time: a memory, a feeling, a decision you’re sitting with. The consistency isn’t in the topic. It’s in the relationship: the same steady, accepting presence, session after session.
Frequently asked questions
The approach doesn’t change the coverage. Most extended health plans cover sessions with a Registered Counselling Therapist or Registered Social Worker. Call the number on your benefits card and ask. We bill most major insurers directly, so you only pay what your plan doesn’t cover; otherwise you get a receipt after every session.
It depends on you and what you’re working on. By session two you’ll have a written plan, and every few sessions we check in with the same short questions so you can see what’s changing. You can stop at any time.
Yes. We offer every approach in person in Dartmouth and by secure video anywhere in Nova Scotia. If one of them works better in person, we’ll tell you.
No. Whichever approach we use, it’s included in your standard session fee. See fees and insurance.
You don’t need to choose an approach before you book. That’s our job, together with you, in the first two sessions.
